In November 2011, the international Espertise™ Talent Award organized by 3M ESPE took place in Seefeld, Germany. This year, 22 junior researchers and clinicians from 18 different countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa took on the challenge and presented their scientific findings or work techniques to the jury in a 15-minute lecture. For each category – scientific research and clinical work – a winner was determined. This year, the award was granted to Ana Milheiro, DDS, a PhD student at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), the Netherlands and Dr. med. dent. Anne-Katrin Lührs of the Medical School Hannover, Germany.

Dr. Ana Milheiro is a dentist and PhD candidate employed at the ACTA. She currently conducts research in the field of health side effects of orthodontic retention wires. In her presentation, she focused on the findings in a study titled “Nickel release from orthodontic retention wires: the action of mechanical loading and pH”, where it could be shown that both, mechanical loading and acidity have a strong impact on nickel release in orthodontic retention wires.

Dr. Anne-Katrin Lührs is a senior physician at the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Periodontology and Preventive Dentistry at the Medical School Hannover. Her 15-minute lecture was devoted to the topic of diastema closure and included numerous clinical pictures. Both winners were rewarded for their efforts.

The second and third place winners are Marco Gresnigt, PhD student at the University Medical Center Groningen, who lectured on the topic of “Laminate veneer restorations adhered to teeth with existing restorations: In vitro and clinical perspectives” and Yaprak Calli from the Yeditepe University Istanbul who gave a presentation on multiple diastema closure.

"The promotion of young talents is the ultimate goal of this award. This year again, we were impressed by the high quality of the lectures with respect to their content, clinical images and way of presentation. All participants used the event as a platform to establish contacts with other researchers from different universities which may be highly advantageous for their future work,” explains Dr. Gerhard Kultermann, member of the jury and Head of Global Scientific Marketing at 3M ESPE in Seefeld, Germany.
