3M ESPE presents a novel aid for retraction

The Astringent Retraction Paste capsule from 3M ESPE has an optimised geometry and a long, slim nozzle with soft edges at the tip.

The innovative Astringent Retraction Paste from 3M ESPE brings convenience into the process of gingival retraction: the capsule’s fine tip can be inserted directly into the sulcus to apply the astringent retraction paste, achieving efficient gingival deflection. The product is suited for various indications including material-based and digital impression taking. It excels through its ease of use and time saving procedure, as confirmed globally by more than 250 field test participants.

As a leading company in the field of impressioning, 3M ESPE has developed numerous world firsts such as Impregum Polyether impression material and the Pentamix automatic mixing unit for homogeneous mixing of impression materials. Now, the company has launched its Astringent Retraction Paste for the opening of the sulcus and hemostatis. The product is suited for any situation where a temporary retraction of the marginal gingiva and a dry and clean sulcus are required, such as material-based and digital impression taking or the preparation of temporaries as well as the preparation of Class II and V fillings.

The unit-dose capsule contains a paste with 15% aluminum chloride and is compatible with most composite dispensers. The procedure is simple: the capsule is fixed in a composite dispenser and a small amount of material is extruded. The capsule’s tip is then inserted into the sulcus which results in a mechanical retraction of the gingiva. While the tip is moved slowly the astringent retraction paste is injected until the sulcus is filled completely. After a minimum of two minutes, the paste is removed completely with air-water spray. For further enhanced gingival deflection the product can optionally be used in combination with a retraction cord.

The product excels through its ease of use, as confirmed by more than 250 dentists globally who participated in an international field test. Dentists that currently use retraction cords were impressed by its convenience: the procedure was rated 50% faster than using cords and there is lower risk of post hemorrhage*. Current retraction paste users especially appreciated the easier application of the paste into the sulcus and better interproximal access. Overall, the long-lasting hemostasis and effective sulcus opening were highlighted. 84 % of the participants would recommend the product to their colleagues*.
