Discover the Universal Bonding Solution
Total-Etch, Self-Etch, Selective-Etch – no matter what adhesive technique you choose, 3M™ ESPE™ Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive is the only adhesive you’ll need. It offers one simple adhesive application technique for both direct and indirect indications and bonds to all surfaces including enamel, dentine, glass ceramic, zirconia, noble and non-precious alloys, and composites – without additional primer. Scotchbond™ universal adhesive is the one adhesive for every practice with the ultimate in strength and speed.
One application procedure. One adhesive for self-etch and total-etch.
3M™ ESPE™ Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive bonds to all surfaces, including enamel, dentine, glass ceramic, zirconia, noble and non-precious alloys, and composites – without additional primer. In combination with 3M™ ESPE™ Scotchbond™ Universal DCA Dual Cure Activator, Scotchbond™ universal adhesive is compatible with all resin cements, core build-up materials and even self-cure composites.
Building on 3M’s adhesives expertise and 3M ESPE’s trusted bonding background, Scotchbond™ universal adhesive features a unique chemistry for true versatility – all in one bottle.
3M™ ESPE™ Vitrebond™ Copolymer provides consistent bonding to dentine under moist or dry conditions.
MDP Monomer optimises self-etch performance, provides chemical bonding to zirconia, alumina and metals without a separate primer, and increases shelf stability so that no refrigeration is needed.
Silane allows the adhesive to chemically bond to glass ceramic surfaces without using a separate ceramic primer.
The development of Scotchbond™ universal adhesive is based on trusted existing technologies currently available in 3M™ ESPE™ Adper™ Scotchbond™ Multi-Purpose Adhesive, Adper™ Scotchbond™ 1 XT Adhesive and Adper™ Easy Bond Self-Etch Adhesive.
Virtually no post-operative sensitivity in total-etch or self-etch applications.
In a study commissioned by 3M™ ESPE™, 120 dentists from various European countries clinically evaluated Scotchbond™ universal adhesive. During the evaluation, dentists placed 3,467 total-etch restorations, 1,544 selective enamel-etch restorations, and 3,495 self-etch restorations. After evaluating, the dentists completed a questionnaire to report their experience with the use of this product.
Out of 120 dentists, only 5 reported patients experiencing sensitivity during the evaluation: 14 cases with total-etch, 0 with selective-etch, and 2 with self-etch technique.
Based on the feedback from this evaluation, the calculated sensitivity rates for each treatment type is as follows:
0.4% for total-etch, 0.0% for selective-etch, and 0.06% for self-etch.

Adhesion to Etched Dentine (Moist and Dry Conditions)
Scotchbond universal adhesive performs well on dentine that has been etched and left either moist or dry. This is a major benefit compared to the traditional 5th generation total-etch adhesives which require that the dentine surface be kept moist following etching.

The unique chemistry will provide consistent performance to etched dentine whether it is kept moist as recommended or dry. Scanning electron mircoscope images of Scotchbond™ universal adhesive applied to etched moist and dry dentine illustrate a distinct hybrid layer and resin tag formation.

Scotchbond™ universal adhesive offers the dentist the flexibility to use one single adhesive in a variety of application methods and achieve high and consistent bond strength - both in the self-etch and total-etch mode.
Shear bond Strength to Indirect Substrates after 10,000 Thermocycles
Dr. Markus B. Blatz, University of Pennsylvania. Bonding composite (to simulate a repair situation or indirect bonding situation) to sandblasted zirconia, alumina and glass ceramic surfaces. Blasted surfaces were treated either with Scotchbond™ Universal Adhesive or with Z-PRIME Plus primer and adhesive, cured and then composite bonded over that. Samples were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles between 5° and 60°C.
Scotchbond™ universal adhesive may also be used as a primer for indirect restorations, made of zirconia, alumina, metal or glass ceramics.
