In recent years 3M Purification has created value solutions for the Machine Coolants market by matching the performance capability of the 3M 700 series filter cartridges and proprietary housings with the needs of the machine coolant applications. High precision machine shops have always strived to improve the quality of the coolant used in their processes. In addition to their function as a coolant, the fluids are carefully selected to assist in the lubrication of the tool and in the transportation of any swarf debris generated. In order for the coolants to be returned to the tool in the recirculating system they must undergo an effective and reproducible purification process to remove not only the machined debris (swarf), but also any external contaminants that have found their way into the fluids ( such as machine wear debris, dust, tramp oil etc). As a lot of these fluids are water based and run at ambient or above temperatures they are also known to support bacteria content which will degrade the coolant quality over time.
As the machining market moves towards ever finer surface finishes it is key that the performance and quality of the coolant used within the machines is optimised, maintained and extended to deliver the high performance required to meet the customer’s demands and expectations. 3M’s 700 series filter cartridges are high surface area radial pleated filters which are ergonomically designed for ease of installation and removal. Each cartridge is made from 3M produced filter media with removal ratings in a range from 1 to 70 micron available in either Polypropylene or for more arduous duties Polyester. The pleat design of the filter ensures optimum flow rates are achieved whilst minimising the differential pressure during operation.
Combining the high removal efficiency ratings with a filter with high surface area to filter the coolants ensures that the machined parts all meet the required cleanliness and quality specifications, whilst improving the process reliability, lowering the maintenance costs of the plant and improving the work environment for the operators.
