Sanitary Quick Change (SQC) in Foodservice Filtration

A major benefit brought by 3M to the water filtration industry is ‘Sanitary Quick Change’ or SQC.

This now means filter change is much easier, quicker and cleaner when compared to, for example, a standard drop in housing and filter cartridge. This allows for removal of specialised engineers involvement in filter change. As on site staff can now carry out filter changes, engineers can spend more time on servicing and maintenance.

Sanitary Quick Change

3M offer a range of heads which offer one of the simplest and easiest change-out on the market today.

Change out can be achieved with simple quarter turns. Inclusion of special ramping mechanisms increase the ease with which cartridges can be removed from the head. Inclusion of valves in certain heads enhances the change-out procedure even further.

Without the need to isolate the water supply filters can be removed simply and quickly.

In drop in housings when you change the filter, you have to open the filter and touch the dirty, contaminated filter and then clean and sanitise the old housing before putting in the new clean filter. As you are touching the dirty filter this is unhygienic.

Changing the filter in a drop in system can also be time consuming. When changing the filter you may need a tool to open the housing. Once open, the housing should be cleaned and sanitised before the new filter is fitted. The new cartridge needs to be inserted correctly, to avoid any misalignments and correct sealing. Typically as the housing requires tightening, to ensure correct cartridge installation and sealing the tool is again required.

In Sanitary quick change systems, there is no contact with the dirty filter. The filter systems are contained in an encapsulated cartridge. This encapsulated system fits into a special head, so when change out comes the entire filter system can be removed. As the dirty filter and water remain inside the encapsulation there is no contact made by people changing the filter. This means a hygienic solution is achieved.

SQC systems as stated above typically have a special head system which simplifies the cartridge change-out, to a simple twist out of the old and twist in of the new. No tools or complicated alignment is required. No sanitisation of the filter housing is necessary as it is new and clean.
