One of the most expensive pieces of equipment to maintain in a back-of-house operation is steam equipment. Blocked drains and deposit build up are mostly due to poor water quality and commonly lead to increased energy consumption.
3M Purification offers solutions to these issues that ensure water is always available, and excessive service calls and increased operational expenses are avoided.
Generating Steam.
Boiler based systems - a boiler heats water to produce steam which is then passed to the heating chamber.
Direct heating platforms eg Flash Steamers - the water is sprayed directly onto a hot surface and converted directly into steam. As the water is sprayed onto a surface, whatever is contained in the water can be deposited onto the surface.
When choosing your treatment it is important to understand how the steam is being generated.
Flash steamers using direct injection can be very sensitive to scale formation so a treatment solution that reduces the levels of hardness and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is preferred. It is not advised to use an inhibitory based treatment such as polyphosphate or treatments which leave the hardness in the water.
For boiler based systems with low to moderate hardness scale inhibition solutions can offer a cost effective solution, as these can work to reduce to keep scale soluble in the boiler which is then flushed out in the flush cycle. Our SF18-S model is an option.
Our ScaleGard Pro range targets temporary hardness. These filters provide a good solution to both methods of steam generation, however may be limited due to capacity on high volumes. Resin systems are not recommended when chloride is present in the water as corrosion issues can occur.

We estimate that 3mm of scale build up can cause 25% energy loss in addition to unwanted and costly service calls.
The Solution:
3M's Scalegard¯ Pro range of water filters helps eliminate scale, which ensures elements stay cleaner and work more efficiently so energy, time and money are all saved.
For total reduction of scale, try our Reverse Osmosis system.
Less equipment failures and downtime as a result of scale
Reduced machine energy consumption and scale build up
Reduced filter costs, without compromising quality
Scale Inhibition
Scale build up in hard water areas causes equipment down time, reduces efficiency, and affects both water level and temperature controls. We estimate that 3mm of scale build up can cause 25% energy loss in addition to unwanted and costly service calls.
For hard water areas we have polyphos based scale inhibition filters that dose polyphosphate into the water to coat areas where scale may form. This provides high-quality water while inhibiting scale growth in the system and unnecessary downtime and service calls.
