Supporting mobile working could help to encourage more legal firms to work together to boost productivity. Richard Hodkinson, chief technology officer at DWF LLP, told a conference attended by chief information officers that introducing remote and mobile working measures could promote collaboration and ensure a modern image to clients.

Speaking at the CIO Mobility Council in London, Mr Hodkinson explained that improved capacity was one benefit of embracing new technology to allow staff to keep in touch no matter where they are located.

  • "Mobile devices make businesses much more connected and improve our business flows around the world."

He also stressed that the advances in social media’s popularity will mean the legal sector will have to move with the times and interact with others in a modern way. “Mobility is more of a collaborative experience,” he said.

“Mobile devices make businesses much more connected and improve our business flows around the world. Lawyers need to be able to make transactions and amendments quickly.” The chief technology officer added “Everything around social tools and mobility now is eventually just the way business will get done.”

Mr Hodkinson’s company has undergone a number of mergers and acquisitions in recent months and told CIO UK that technology could have a key role to play in bringing together employees. “I don’t talk about technology when I talk to the business; I talk about the benefits. The technology doesn’t always interest me, but I like to be the facilitator and take people with me. In my industry and business I need to be a bit of a psychologist and sociologist as well,” he explained.

Last year, a survey by the Trades Union Congress estimated that there has been a 13 per cent rise over the past five years in the number of people who do not work solely from an office or standard workplace. It is thought the advancement of technology such as smartphones, high-speed broadband and online cloud storage has helped to allow companies to offer workers more flexible working options.
