Remote workers may face increased stress because they can check their email out of work hours – but they also feel it has helped them to improve the quality of their life. A new survey found that almost half of staff who frequently check their work email outside of normal office hours are likely to experience more stress throughout the day.

Gallup polled 4,475 adults living across the US and found being able to access email frequently could have an impact on mental health compared to those who did not read their correspondence away from the workplace. The growth of smartphone and tablet use means more people are able to keep track of their inboxes outside of office hours and can keep in touch while on the move. However, this does bring with it some downsides, such as not being able to separate work and leisure time and possible data security issues.

  • However, those who are able to work remotely without travelling into the workplace believe they have a better quality of life compared to those who are stuck behind an office desk.

“Even after controlling for all key demographics, workers who leverage mobile technology more often outside of work are much more likely to be stressed on any given day, while simultaneously being more likely to rate their lives better,” explained the researchers of the study. However, it was likely that the type of job that supported remote working could be more demanding and therefore such occupations were likely to have higher stress levels associated with them.

  • The research found that 62 per cent of workers had employers who would expect them to check their email accounts outside of normal office hours.

In some cases so-called “productive stress” could play a key role in enabling employees to achieve more and may be desirable to ensure that tasks are completed effectively. The research found that 62 per cent of workers had employers who would expect them to check their email accounts outside of normal office hours – highlighting the rise in the need for people to have access to information while on the go.
