It is now estimated that 17.9 million Brits have access to a tablet – compared to 11 million in 2013.This increase in mobile device ownership means many more firms are facing an increase in staff who wish to work from home, on trains and in coffee shops. However, this can mean significant challenges for businesses as they balance flexibility with the need to ensure security.

Last year a survey from Staples Advantage discovered 93 per cent of employees felt supporting telecommuting is beneficial, with 53 per cent feeling it leads to more productive employees and this can help business prospects. “Telecommuting programmes are gaining more acceptance,” said Neil Ringel, executive vice president of Staples Advantage.

“When we asked office workers and office decision makers about their companies’ telecommuting practices, a majority acknowledged that their offices do allow telecommuting.” There has also been growing concern about the “bring your own devices” (BYOD) trend as more people rely on smartphones and tablets to keep in touch and organise their lives, reports Forbes.

Indeed, there are numerous challenges as a result of BYOD for IT departments and the impact it may have on data security. New York-based risk management company Stroz Friedberg recently concluded that 87 per cent of senior management level employees use their personal devices to email work files or share them in cloud-based storage. Therefore firms are being advised to make sure they establish clear policies to cover BYOD and take steps to ensure that all data accessed remotely is secure.
