    Many employees opt to work while away on holiday, according to a new survey. The study by workplace website Glassdoor surveyed more than 2,000 workers and discovered that many do not take their full holiday entitlement and can often be found checking their emails while away from the office. In total only 77 per cent of staff use their full annual leave allowances, with some giving up more than six days per year rather than taking a break. Workers aged between 16 and 34 were the most likely not to want to take time away from the workplace. This means that some employers may be getting around £18 billion a year in free work based on average earnings of £474 per week.

    Joe Wiggins of Glassdoor explained the research highlighted that it is increasingly difficult for some people to switch off from work – this could be down to the rise in the use of mobile devices to check in with the office when out and about.

    He added: “While there is always work to be done, employees should be conscious of using time off they’ve earned to recharge. In turn, employers should consider being more clear to everyone about what it means to be on holiday, actually let others be on leave, and go beyond just encouraging employees to use time off. “Some real rest and relaxation will help employees return to work energised, ready to contribute and make them less susceptible to burn-out.” Overall, around 44 per cent of employees did some work while on holiday and this could mean checking emails or accessing shared work files on the go – often on personal devices rather than work IT equipment.  For some firms this could highlight the need to ensure that any remote access that involves sensitive data meets strict security guidelines and there is no possibility of information being misused or lost.
