Barrier cream proves a hit for boxers

Amateur boxers fighting in the Elite Men's competitions are being told by the sport's world ruling body that they must use 3M™ Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream to help protect their faces prior to a bout.

The mandate by the AIBA (International Boxing Federation) follows its decision to stop male fighters from wearing head guards in Olympic-style boxing events to reduce the number of concussion cases in the sport. It's claimed that the heavier weight of the head guards added to the risk.

The barrier cream was first made available to boxers and their trainers on an optional basis, but following its use in the recent Commonwealth Games it has now been written into the AIBA technical rules.

Product manager Flo Hall provided samples of the barrier cream for trial at the Commonwealth Games. She said: "Cavilon durable barrier cream is primarily used for protecting the skin of older patients who require long-lasting protection from body fluids so this is a very different market application.

"We are already getting a great deal of interest from boxing clubs and trainers around the country asking us for more information about how to buy the product and we are working with the 3M Direct team to make the 2g sachets available through this route."
