Reducing the Risk


This July a new EU directive comes into force that will have a major impact on the UK manufacturing industry, particularly the casting and forging sector.

The new law (known as the Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive 2002/44/EC) strengthens the power of the Health and Safety Executive to take action against firms proven not to be doing their utmost to protect workers from excessive vibration of the hand and arm, which can cause a range of painful and disabling conditions.

Reducing complexity with our Interactive CD

To make information clearer and more accessible, 3M has developed an interactive CD presentation containing modules on the legislation, risk management techniques, sales training, 3M product solutions, case studies and interviews with industry experts.

The presentation can be tailored to suit different audiences, allowing information to be called up as the presentation unfolds and providing the right level of detail, from a quick overview to in-depth technical data.

Helping to limit the risks

Employers can take preventative steps to limit the risks, including:

  • reducing the duration and intensity of exposure to vibration
  • keeping manufacturing sites warm to maintain good blood circulation
  • replacing older, high vibration grinding machines with modern, low vibration alternatives in combination with high-quality abrasives from 3M

A number of 3M’s products - including 3M Cubitron™ Coated Abrasive Belts and 3M™ Green Corps™ Flexible Grinding Discs - have enhanced flexibility and superior cutting characteristics.  Used with the right equipment, they can contribute to a reduction in the level of vibration generated to the hand and arm as well as helping to lower operator fatigue, improve the workplace environment and improve surface finish.
