Frequently Asked Questions

Scotchgard™ Soft Furnishings Protector

Q: On what kind of textile can I use Scotchgard™ Soft Furnishings Protector?
A: This product is applicable for all textile fibres. Always try on a small inconspicuous area of your material.
Q: I’m not sure how to spray it?
A: Spray evenly over the surface from left to right and from top to bottom, at a distance of 15 – 30 cm (6 to 12 inches). Multiple spraying will increase performance but avoid overspraying. When overspraying occurs, wipe off with a paper cloth. Allow to dry overnight prior to use.
Q: I bought my spray can 6 months ago and the valve is blocked. What can I do?
A: Please contact your local 3M customer services office.

Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Cleaner

Q: On what type of fabrics can I use Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Cleaner?
A: This product works great on most fabrics! Whether natural fabrics like cotton & wool, synthetic fabrics like polyester & nylon. (It is always good to test in an inconspicuous spot for colour bleeding.) We do not recommend using on rugs, carpets, suede, plastics, or vinyl. On upholstery, check furniture manufacturer's care and warranty information. Examples of usage include: sofa, chairs, auto upholstery, Campervans & Caravans, throw pillows, table linens, place mats, window treatments, crafts, canvas shoes, & more!
Q: Can I use Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Cleaner for 'X'-coded fabrics?
A: We do not recommend using on fabrics with Cleanability codes of 'X.' 'X' stands for brush only and shouldn't be cleaned with water or solvents.
Q: My sofa armrests are made of wood. How can I protect them?
A: Should overspraying occur on wooden, metal or plastic parts, immediately remove/wipe off excess with a paper-cloth. Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Cleaner is not suitable for protecting wood.
Q: Can I use this product as a spot cleaner?
A: Yes, this product will work as a spot cleaner, however, it is intended more for larger and high-traffic areas. For best results in removing a spot or stain, we recommend using the Scotchgard™ OXY Carpet Cleaner plus Stain Protector.
Q: On what items can I use this product?
A: You can use it on rugs, residential or commercial carpeting, and automobile carpeting and matting. Always check for colourfastness first by testing in an inconspicuous area.
Q: How long does it take to dry?
A: Under average room temperature conditions (21Degs C, 50% Humidity), normal dry time is four to six hours. Always be sure to check before resuming normal traffic in the treated areas. Longer dry times could occur under the following conditions: colder temperatures, more humid conditions, or heavy applications. Providing for proper ventilation for the product will also provide a quicker dry time in most conditions.
Q: Is this product safe to use on wool rugs?
A: The product is safe for use on wool rugs that can be cleaned with water. (Some may have a "cleanability code" - where "W" or "WS" would indicate it is safe to be cleaned with water.) If it says, "Dry Clean Only," then we would not recommend application. Always check for colourfastness first by testing in an inconspicuous area.

Scotchgard™ Rug & Carpet Cleaner

Q: Will my carpet stiffen from using Scotchgard™ Rug & Carpet Cleaner?
A: No. Using Scotchgard cleaners does not change the look or feel of carpeting. Occasionally, slight over-application of Scotchgard cleaners or accelerated drying (with fans or heat) may cause treated articles to stiffen. Simply, vacuum the affected areas and the carpet will feel normal again.
Q: Can I use this product for oriental rugs?
A: We do not recommend this product for use on oriental rugs. We have found the variability between manufacturers and the occasional use of food dyes can produce unusual and unpredictable results.
Q: My fabric has a cleanability code on it - what does this mean?
A: Some colour dyes used in certain fabrics will bleed if washed with water; some will bleed if cleaned with solvents. The cleanability code will state whether the fabric colour is safe to clean with water (W), solvents (S), both (W/S), or brush only (X). Scotchgard™ Fabric Cleaner can be used safely with W and W/S coded fabrics. It should not be used on S or X fabrics. (We always recommend testing in an inconspicuous area first and following all directions and precautions on the label. In addition, check furniture manufacturer's care and warranty information as some cushion materials may not be compatible leading to potential fabric staining.)
