Scotchgard is 3M’s protective coating, and it can be seen on a vast number of things from easy chairs to shoes, and carpets to coats. It is effectively an invisible barrier, which repels water-based problems such as rain, wine and coffee, and helps protect against stains.

The 3M story is that Scotchgard was invented accidentally, but then 3M legend holds so many stories about products being discovered by accident, one sometimes suspects that the company has a corporate sense of humour about it.

Floor maintenance takes up far more of an FM’s budget than may be realised. Last year, the business development manager of 3M’s building division in America calculated that in areas, which were built to undergo very high constant footfall, such as airports, hospital corridors and shopping malls, janitorial costs could reach a third of the facility budget.
