I am a nurse in a busy cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, where the buzzing and humming of many machines often presents a challenge when I am trying to hear lung, heart and belly sounds. As an anesthesiologist, I use my stethoscope dozens of times a day. I started using the Littmann Model 3000 six months ago. It wasn’t until I began the two week free trial of this scope that I became aware of the limitations of my previous scope. The Model 3000 is ideal for an anesthesiologist because the operating room and preoperative areas, the two places where I most frequently use my scope, are noisy environments. For example, there is constant conversation between surgeons, nurses and anesthesiologists. In addition, surgical equipment and anesthesia monitors make loud buzzing and beeping sounds. Sometimes music is even being played. Because of this background noise, the ambient noise reduction feature of the Model 3000 is very beneficial. This scope definitely helps me pick up subtle, critical changes in breath sounds, as well as murmurs and signs of congestive heart failure.

I am a pediatric nurse practitioner and work in a school-based setting that is often extremely noisy. Part of my job includes conducting sports physicals for student athletes, and because I am not working in an optimal clinical setting it’s challenging to hear well enough to accurately diagnose all issues. I was thrilled when several weeks ago my husband bought me the Littmann Model 3000 for my upcoming birthday, but little did I know how necessary this scope would be on the actual day of my birthday. On that day, I was called to aid in a potential respiratory emergency of a 350-pound student athlete. Using the ambient noise reduction and adjustable volume settings of my Model 3000, I was quickly able to determine that the student was fully inflating his lungs, which I would never have known by using my old stethoscope. I instantly knew that I did not need to perform CPR and that he was simply having a panic attack. After the incident I called my husband right away to thank him for giving me this invaluable birthday gift.

I agreed to do a study with the 3M Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3000, comparing it to my current, cardiology-type stethoscope. The Littmann Model 3000 won hands down. I have patients on ventilators in the ICU and alarms going off all the time on a variety of equipment. With the Littmann Model 3000, I am able to listen to the patient and make assessment with confidence, even while nurses and doctors are talking around me and alarms are sounding.

Electronic stethoscopes have improved dramatically in the past few years. I have been using a stethoscope for over 30 years and I was not always able to hear all heart sounds clearly. About two years ago I heard about the Littmann Model 3000 after attending a human cardiology conference, and what a difference it’s made in my practice! With the Ambient Noise Reduction (ANR) technology of the Model 3000, there is now a marked reduction in unwanted ambient noise that is extremely helpful when I listen for abnormal heart sounds. This new technology applies quite well to veterinary medicine as the amplification of sounds is very useful for the different species and breeds, and switching between bell and diaphragm is also very easy to do. I recommend that any practicing veterinarian try the Model 3000, I know they’ll be as happy with it as I am.”

I have evaluated the 3M Littmann Model 3000 Stethoscope for the past few months, and have found it to be superior to other stethoscopes I have used in the past. The sound amplification allows me to hear the very faint wheezes and crackles that I could not hear with a conventional stethoscope. It is also easier to hear the faint systolic and diastolic blood pressure sounds during a stress test.

The Model 3000 beats other stethoscopes I’ve used hands down; its acoustics, ergonomics and versatility are superb. As a paramedic and nursing student working in harsh, noisy environments – ambulances and hospitals – I need a rugged stethoscope that filters out as much noise as possible while being versatile enough to fit many situations and sizes of people. Working in these settings, I need any edge I can get, and the Model 3000 clearly gives me an edge. Just the other day, I had a patient’s family member in the hospital room talking as I was listening to the patient’s lungs, and I couldn’t even hear the family member. By blocking out this distracting noise, the Model 3000 allowed me to fully concentrate on the patient’s sounds I needed to hear – that was a first for me! Additionally, I’ve used the 3000 to treat patients ranging from neonates to adults, and have experienced the same great quality no matter which type of patient I’ve treated. As a hearing-impaired pediatrician whose hearing loss is in the range where children speak, I had long been searching for a stethoscope to meet my needs. Enter the Littmann Model 3000! This stethoscope makes hearing children’s cardiac and respiratory sounds much easier for me due to its excellent amplification and ambient noise reduction technology. In my busy pediatric practice there are often little children running around causing excessive background noise that can hinder my ability to hear well, but this stethoscope really eliminates that noise and makes my job a whole lot easier. The Model 3000 is also extremely comfortable, fitting perfectly in my ear with a hearing aid in place. My pediatric patients especially love the “no-chill factor” of this stethoscope. The Model 3000 has been a great buddy to me and I only wish it had been around earlier in my medical career.

I am currently in training to be an EMT, and was searching the internet a couple of months ago for a stethoscope that would enable me to hear heart and lung sounds in the back of a screeching ambulance. After reading about and trying the Littmann Model 3000 I was instantly hooked, and now feel as though I can’t do my job without it. The amplification properties allow me to hear critical body sounds even in the loudest of emergency situations. I have encouraged my entire department to try the Model 3000, including the Chief, and everyone has become a huge fan - some are even planning to buy their own soon. If something were to happen to this scope, I would immediately run out and buy another one – that’s how valuable the Model 3000 is to me.

Until I entered nursing school, I didn’t realize that I have small ear canals as well as a slight hearing deficiency. After browsing the Internet I came upon information about the Littmann Model 3000 that seemed perfect for my needs, and was happy to learn that I could try this scope through the loaner program before committing to the purchase. As a nursing student, I understand the necessity of being able to clearly hear breath and heart sounds. I had been using an acoustic stethoscope in my coursework and was having a great deal of difficulty hearing all sounds, so I spoke to my instructor about the problem and she let me try out her electronic stethoscope. Instantly I realized that I could hear much better using an electronic model, so I decided to log on to the Internet and find a version to purchase. Since 3M has a strong reputation for high-quality products, I visited the 3M Web site to see what stethoscopes it offered. I found that the Littmann Model 3000 appeared to be a perfect match for my needs, and offered a free trial opportunity so there was no risk involved. As soon as my Model 3000 arrived, I became hooked and immediately made the decision to purchase it. It’s simply amazing how well it works – the scope blocks out virtually all ambient noise, and it’s comfortable too! After trying out my Model 3000, several of my professors said they now want a Model 3000 as well. I highly recommend the Model 3000 to any nursing student who wants to vastly improve their auscultation skills – and impress their professors!

In a multicentre clinical study, doctors rated the Littmann Model 3000 significantly better than traditional, non-electronic stethoscopes when comparing the tone and clarity of heart, lung, blood vessel, and bowel sounds. Controlled Experiments
¹ 191 cardiologists, the overwhelming majority of whom had not previously used the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope Model 3000, listened to prerecorded heart sounds with and without an S3 gallop of two different magnitudes, presented in random order and in the presence of 70-75 dB ambient noise. They listened with both a Model 3000 and an acoustic (non-electronic) cardiology-type stethoscope. |
