3M supports the BSIF Fit2Fit scheme
The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has launched Fit2Fit, an accreditation scheme for respirator face fit testers.
The scheme has been developed by the BSIF with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), fit test service providers and manufacturers of respiratory protective equipment.
3M sits on the technical committee and the governing body of the scheme. The technical committee wrote the syllabus for the scheme, the multiple choice exam questions and the requirements of the practical assessment.
The Fit2Fit scheme does not bring in any new requirements; it simply gives a means of assessing what has always been expected of a fit tester. Fit2Fit helps employers by showing them that fit test service providers they are considering using have been independently assessed and can operate to the standard required. It also gives employers a means of assessing the competencies of their in-house fit testers.
The scheme assesses the competencies of a fit tester through them sitting a multiple choice examination and performing a fit test in front of an assessor. An experienced fit tester who has been working to and fully understands the HSE’s fit testing guidance is unlikely to need further training to become accredited.
The 3M Occupational Health group’s field sales team has recently been through the Fit2Fit scheme. 3M is pleased to announce that we are the first manufacturer to have our sales and technical teams accredited. Their accreditation gives customers the reassurance that fit testing training delivered by 3M will be in-line with the HSE guidance. It also demonstrates 3M’s commitment to developing and assessing its staff.
