EN 470-1:1995 Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes

This standard specifies performance requirements for protective clothing worn during welding operations to protect the wearer from molten metal splash, short accidental contact time with flame and UV radiation.

The performance requirements for clothing conforming to this standard include:

• Design requirements e.g. to minimise trapping of metal splashes
• General performance requirements including tensile and tear strength, dimensional stability,
• Flame Spread (tested to EN532)
• Protection against small droplets of molten metal (EN348).

It is advised that the garment wearer is provided with the following special information:

• Contamination with flammable materials, e.g. oil or solvents, can seriously jeopardize the flame retardant properties of the clothing.
• The clothing in itself does not protect against electrical shock; other measures to be taken to protect the welder against electrocution (moisture and transpiration, decreases the electrical insulation of the clothing)
• An oxygen-enriched atmosphere increases the flammability risk.

The EN 470-1 standard is already under revision.  The final version of the revised standard is in the final vote and will hopefully be published in 2007, under the ISO 11611.
