Speeding is considered one of the main causes of accidents with fatal consequences. In urban areas where vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles share the same space, pedestrians account for up to 35% of the road fatalities. while bicycles account for up to 24%. Close to 10% are younger than 18 years old. In addition many more are seriously injured.
- In a 30mph zone a pedestrian has 95% chance to survive a vehicle collision, but studies have shown that more than 90% of the cars and trucks do not respect the speed limit of 30mph.
- In a 50mphr zone a pedestrian has less than 50% chance of surviving an accident, yet still 60 to 70% of vehicles are speeding.
This means that any measure to reduce speed should be considered, especially near schools, hospitals, public buildings, sport centres etc.
The University of Wuppertal stated that speed warning systems have been successful in reducing speeds by 20 to 25%.
Studies in France concluded that if every driver would respect the speed limit, up to 900 lives could be saved.
Below are some case studies to demonstrate how the 3M Driver Feedback Sign has contributed to a better road situation.
