3M has today announced the withdrawal of its Frangible Post System.
Designed to collapse on impact from a vehicle, the innovative sign post system offers a passive safety alternative to traditional steel posts, protecting drivers and passengers, while minimising vehicle damage.
Announcing the decision, Billy Evans, sales and marketing manager for 3M’s Traffic Safety Systems business, said: “Although feedback from customers has been very positive, a range of diameters is required by the market.
“Following a recent review of our investment priorities, however, we have concluded that we are unable to commit the necessary level of funding required to develop the range at this stage. We have therefore decided to withdraw the existing product rather than continue with a limited range capable of serving only part of the market’s needs.”
While it is not actively seeking a potential purchaser for the system, 3M said it would be willing to consider offers that matched the company’s valuation.
The Frangible Post System is the only post of its size to achieve an NE3 classification at 70 and 100kph (EN12767 crash tests). It is also the only post to be tested passively safe (NE2) at >=750mm spacing.

3M has confirmed that it has sold the IP rights for the Frangible Post System to Frangible Safety Posts Ltd (FSP) for an undisclosed sum. FSP has appointed ASD Metal Services as its distributor.
