Go With The Flow
When our road networks aren't operating efficiently, the country isn't operating efficiently either. The staggering fact is that problems with traffic flow can cost the UK economy billions of pounds every year, and it's hard to put a price on the frustration that comes with all those delays.
Journey Time Measurement Systems (JTMS) are used to measure the progress of vehicles travelling along pre-defined roads. The use of this technology, which provides helpful information for the motorist, as well as monitoring traffic flow, has resulted in significant benefits for authorities and drivers alike.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition
3M's Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology provides one of the most sophisticated JTMS systems on the market. The data generated is used by road authorities to determine average journey time and speed and manage the performance of the road network. The software can identify congested routes, alert drivers of potential delays and facilitate planning for road network improvements. Authorities can also use the data to respond quickly to incidents, reducing congestion, improving access, road safety and air quality.
While JTMS systems are probably most conspicuous on our motorways, they are playing an increasingly important role within our towns and cities. Gathering accurate traffic flow data in urban areas is becoming more and more important for local authorities as they determine the best ways to keep roads congestion-free and the local economy on the move.
