3Mgives community programme

Our philosophy

At 3M we believe that commercial success and corporate responsibility are inseparable, so we are committed to making a fitting contribution to the communities in which we have plants or offices.

Our award-winning 3Mgives community programme in the UK and Ireland is not about reacting to general requests for cash donations - it is a proactive programme focused on those areas where we believe our contribution can make a real difference.  We aim to support organisations that help communities help themselves.

Our national programme

As a science-based technology company, 3M understands the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects – people with STEM qualifications form a large part of our employee base.  However, the Government and industry alike recognise that too few pupils - in particular female students - are staying with these subjects beyond GCSE.  We therefore aim to help increase this talent pool – our target employees of the future - by doing whatever we can to make these subjects real and relevant to pupils.

Our community programme encompasses partnering with schools local to our major sites; the donation of in-kind gifts of 3M products and services; visits to (and the use of) 3M facilities; encouragement of employee volunteering - particularly STEM Ambassadors; matching our employees' fundraising achievements, and creating free online teaching resources that can be used by schools throughout the UK and Ireland.

3M Careerwise encourages 11–14 year-olds to think about their interests and motivations.  By answering a series of simple questions, they get a personalised profile and are introduced to real 3M employees who share some of their characteristics.  The 3M employees share:

  • what they were like at school
  • what jobs they've done
  • what they do now
  • what advice they would give their teenage selves.

Our STEM Ambassadors go into schools to show that scientists and engineers do not all spend their lives wearing white coats working in laboratories.  They demonstrate that a wide range of interesting and rewarding careers are open to people with STEM qualifications.  Through them, we aim to engage and motivate students to choose science, technology, engineering and maths when the time comes to consider qualifications and careers.

3M is a signatory to the UK Government's 'Your Life' campaign to encourage greater participation among women in STEM careers.
