Earth Day 201121 April 2011 Consumers may not realise that some televisions use up a good chunk of electricity in their homes. 3M is inventing a better tomorrow by helping customers reduce their environmental footprint with innovative products like 3M Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) designed to help cut LCD TV energy consumption by up to 32 per cent. This is just one example of 3M know-how enabling the development of entire families of energy-saving products for customers, while reducing its own environmental footprint. Since 1990, 3M has made great strides in preventing pollution from its own operations by reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 96 per cent - from 255 million pounds to 10.9 million pounds and by cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by more than three-quarters (77 per cent). It is through the company’s sound practices that consumers and customers can reap the benefits in their businesses by reducing their own environmental impact. “At 3M, we are experts at problem-solving, whether it’s our own environmental challenges or that of our customers. Harnessing the chain reaction of new ideas, we create game-changing technologies and products in the sustainability space,” said Fred Palensky, 3M Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President, Research and Development. 3M DBEF, for example, improves the efficiency of LCD TVs by recycling polarised light making energy-conuming TVs more efficient - and with the advantages of a thinner and lighter television. The Scotch-Brite Bamboo Kitchen Cloth is made from natural fibres – 60 per cent bamboo, 40 per cent cotton. Unlike timber, bamboo is a self-regenerating natural resource; harvesting bamboo does not kill the whole plant, so there is no need for replanting - it just grows back, demonstrating how making small changes and rethinking the everyday cleaning routine is an easy way for consumers to reduce their impact on the earth.
