Knighthood for George Buckley
13 June 2011
George Buckley has received a knighthood in the Queen's birthday honours list.
Sir George, who was born, raised and educated in Yorkshire, and who worked in the UK for much of his career, became chairman, president and chief executive of 3M in 2005. His knighthood crowns decades of achievement in electrical engineering, with no fewer than 12 patents to his name. He was the first non-American to be made head of 3M and he is the only British CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
Since arriving at 3M, Sir George has reintroduced a culture of innovation, which has seen the company - whose early inventions include masking tape - not only survive but thrive during the recession. Its net income in 2010 was $4.1bn, up from $3.2bn the previous year.
Sir George said: "I am delighted and honoured to receive such an award. I am extremely proud to be British and to fly the flag for British and international manufacturing. I look forward to putting my experience to full use when I return to the UK."
3M is a registered trademark of 3M Company
