3M supports customers with added value service tools

25 November 2010

3M, the diversified technology company, has extended its added value service tools portfolio to support health and safety managers in the training, education and product selection of hearing protective equipment (HPE).

The Hearing Selector Tool is a free service available via the 3M website www.3M.co.uk/ohes - and allows users to input the noise levels of their working environment into a datasheet. This then helps users select suitable products for the workplace. The selection process can be carried out by two methods depending on the data collected – the High, Medium, Low (HML) method can be selected if LA (at ear) and LC (peak) values have been identified, or the Octave Band Analysis method if octave band analysis noise measurement has been undertaken.

The Hearing Selector Tool will automatically choose suitable hearing products for that noise level. The product lists have been colour coded as green: the optimum product for the task, yellow: a suitable product for the task and red: not acceptable for the task.

The Hearing Selector Tool has been updated to include the full passive hearing range available from 3M, including Peltor and E-A-R products. It also complements other 3M services, such as the Hearing Conservation Presentation, Noise Awareness DVD and the free service Noise Check, which are available to 3M customers to ensure that the correct HPE is selected to meet the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Sue Poole, Product Manager within 3M’s Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division, says: “As a specialist in personal protection equipment, we understand how important it is to make the right choice. The added value service tools we offer, such as the Hearing Selector Tool, not only support end users when it comes to the selection of HPE but also results in time and money benefits by simplifying the selection process and offering customers a wider range of products to choose from.

“It is our aim to not only provide our customers with high quality, comfortable products but to also add value by helping to educate and train them in noise awareness. This is where we believe our service tools really add something to the customer experience.”

3M design products to protect the head, face and hearing and the Hearing Protection range includes a variety of options from disposable ear plugs to hi-tech electronic ear defenders.

Using the Hearing Selector Tool software is not sufficient by itself to satisfy the legal obligation to prevent the risk of noise-induced hearing damage that is required by the Directive. Users must therefore satisfy themselves as to the suitability of these 3M Hearing Protection Devices for the required purpose.
