3M recognised for ‘Best Innovation’ by water trade body
17 December 2013
The Scotchkote Manhole Repair Kit from diversified technology company 3M has won the ‘Best Innovation Award’ from The Society of British Water and Wastewater Industries (SBWWI), a trade association for the UK water industry and supply chain.
The kit is a fast and effective solution for sunken or rocking covers, safely levelling them with minimal disruption to road users and negating the need to replace the manhole frame and cover or for contractors to assume responsibility for any reinstatement as with traditional replacement methods.
The 3M innovation was commended in a year when judges of the SBWWI Awards were particularly impressed with the quality of entries.
3M was awarded the ‘Best Innovation Award’ following a Dragons Den-style pitch where company representatives presented the product to a panel of industry experts including Steve Kaye from Anglian Water, Richard Price from Southern Water, and Simon Rutter from Thames Water. Ian Tindell from 3M presented to the ‘Dragons’ and was quizzed on the savings and operational benefits it can generate for water companies with the repair kit. To date, it has shown considerable cost savings compared to replacement of manhole covers, as well as a significant reduction in disruption for road users.
The kit comes with everything needed to complete a repair, meaning that no additional specialist or expensive equipment is needed. The kit, which is available through Maker Coating Systems, suppliers of specialist coating products and consultancy services for industrial applications, includes Scotchkote Urethane Metal Repair RG 501 by 3M, a rapid-repair curing system for rebuilding or repairing metalwork with a good mechanical strength, as well as Scotchkote 020 Cleaner and Scotchkote Release Agent 035 to ensure good adhesion and enhance the reliability of the repair.
