Abrasives and power tools from 3M – the complete solution

9 December 2013

With a portfolio of blue-chip brands, diversified technology company 3M is a leader in the field of abrasives technology.  The Scotch-Brite Brand from 3M is synonymous with abrasives and the highly innovative grain technology employed by the Cubitron II Range by 3M, which combines significant advantages in both productivity and consistency with a longer service life.  To complement these innovative brands, 3M has also extended its expertise to a comprehensive range of power tools, which with its range of abrasives and accessories provide a complete solution for optimised performance.

The 3M power tool systems combine robust and ergonomic design with excellent performance for a wide variety of workshop tasks. As Nigel Willcock, Technical Service Engineer for the 3M Abrasive Systems division explains, the tools are designed to bring out the best in the abrasives’ performance:  “3M abrasives are well established as universal products, designed to be effective with  whatever tools they are used.  However, by applying our abrasives expertise to the development of the 3M power tool systems, we believe that we have achieved an ideal combination of tools and consumables.  The power tools are specifically designed for 3M products and ensure that users will get the optimum performance and results that our abrasives can deliver.”

The 3M power tool systems offer a complete range of air-powered and electric tools for cutting, grinding, blending and finishing.  An example of how they complement popular 3M abrasives is the Elite Air-Powered Random Orbital Sander by 3M which is widely regarded as a best-in-class product offering a cost-effective solution for surface preparation and finishing, optimising performance of Hookit Discs and the recently introduced Scotch-Brite ROS Discs, both by 3M.  Built to last for operations that are tough on tools through constant use, the model has a durable composite cover with an aluminium body that protects the tool from accidental damage such as a cracked housing, so keeping it  in service.

For a combination of power and precision, the high-specification Air-Powered File Belt Sander by 3M comes complete with eight different attachment arms, for a variety of applications. It features an innovative belt cover enabling faster belt changes, while its Greptile Gripping Material by 3M on the handle ensures a safe comfortable grip. With a lightweight, durable construction and a 0.6HP motor creating an impressive power-to-weight ratio, its belt head and handle can be rotated to any angle so making it easier to access hard-to-reach areas.

Not to be missed is the Air-Powered Disc Sander by 3M which combines high performance and durability.  When partnered with the Roloc Quick Release System by 3M, a tough duo is created, allowing greater access to work pieces compared to conventinal larger disc attachments.  All models feature a powerful, high torque air-motor to optimise the performance of the disc system and provide a fast, efficient method for grinding, blending, deburring and finishing on all types of metal.

A key theme that runs throughout the 3M range of power tools is ergonomic design.  Nigel Willcock adds:  “It goes without saying that power tools need to be durable and reliable to maximise productivity and ensure minimum downtime.  Equally important, however, is that they are designed with the user in mind, so we focus on issues such as power-to-weight ratio and ease of operations such as belt or disc changes.

“In our product design, we also aim to minimise the impact use of a power tool may have on the operative using it. The range is, therefore, designed for maximum user comfort, with features such as reduced vibration, quiet operation, ergonomially designed grips and extended wrist supports. Our power tool systems are designed not only to bring out the best in our abrasives products but to offer a faster, better overall performance which contributes to workshop efficiency and productivity.”
